The Braddock Elementary School PTA has the long-term goal of raising awareness, and volunteer hours as well as funding STEM programs, which will directly benefit Braddock Elementary students.
82% of BES students participate in the free/reduced lunch program, highlighting a weighty socioeconomic need within the community. The population is also culturally diverse and weighted toward speakers of other languages. This demographic is historically underrepresented in STEM arenas, both in schools and STEM careers, due in part to a lack of adequate early and regular exposure. Any student interested in future STEM endeavors must have the necessary background knowledge and vocabulary to pursue STEM tracks early in their school career. Without this foundation, young learners will struggle as they move through secondary and higher education, and will ultimately opt-out of higher-level STEM courses.
The BES PTA, administration and staff are currently working to promote focused programs within the school that will engage the student population in STEM fields, thereby extending the connection to technical learning and bridging the current achievement gap. BES in collaboration with cross-sector, STEM-rich partners has implemented several specific programs across the curriculum to ensure the path is laid for underrepresented students to enter and succeed in STEM fields. These programs include, but are not limited to, Young Scholars, VEX robotics, Microsoft coding, The Children’s Science Center Science nights and The Pearl Project Institute (TPPI) Summer STEM program. Together, BES and its partners are providing meaningful opportunities in STEM subjects, curriculum and experiences for its students.
